When it comes to picking pallets for your next shipments there are several things that you will need to bear in mind. Specifically, you must consider the material from which your pallet will be made, what size and style of pallet you need to purchase, and where that pallet will be sent.

Which material will be used?

Pallets are sometimes made of plastic but more typically they are created using either hard or softwood. In most cases, softwood will be perfectly adequate but hardwood pallets are stronger and could be a good investment if you have particularly heavier products ready for distribution.

What style of pallet would be best?

Do you need a stringer pallet or a block pallet? Stringer pallets use at least three parallel bits of wood to construct the frame. For a more robust option, you can purchase block pallets. Block pallets are designed for loads which weigh more and for four-way entry. If you aren't sure whether your load will require a block pallet then you can ask your pallet supplier.

What size pallet do you need?

Choosing the size of pallet isn't as straightforward as you might think and your choice of pallet size will probably depend on where you are sending your pallet. You could opt for the Australian standard pallet size of 1165 × 1165 mm. This size is perfectly suited for transportation using the Australian railway network but this is not a standard used elsewhere in the world. If you are shipping your pallet internationally and will need to use an ISO container then you would normally want an 1100 × 1100 mm pallet. This size of pallet is commonly used in countries such as Korea and Japan.

Is your pallet compliant?

In addition to the size of pallet you use internationally, you will also have to think about whether your chosen pallet is compliant with the ISPM 15 regulations. Complying with ISPM 15 regulations ensures that your pallet has been heat-treated to prevent cross-contamination by invasive species. If it cannot be demonstrated that your pallet meets the requirements you could find that it is turned back at the border or that your goods will need to be repalletized at your expense.

For help choosing the best the right pallet for your load you should speak to your local pallet supplier they will have the experience to suggest the right option for your needs.
