If your kitchen is small and dark, and you have some space to build, then you may have decided to extend the room. Even a small extension gives you a better working space; a larger build could turn your kitchen into a new living area as well.

As you design your renovation, you may have to add more windows to the extension. In some cases, it makes more sense to put skylight windows in the roof than to add them to walls. What are the benefits of using skylights?

1. Bring in More Light

If you want a brighter kitchen, then skylights can really open up the room. They allow light to stream in from above. Plan their location carefully and you can light up the whole room. Plus, if you install skylights in a vaulted ceiling, you create more space in your kitchen.

This is also useful if you will have problems getting regular wall windows to bring in enough light. For example, if a wall you would use for window space looks out on a large fence or another building, then a window might not let in as much light as you think. The structure outside the window would block light from coming in.

2. Get Better Ventilation

Kitchens can get hot and steamy; they aren't always easy to ventilate. If you install skylights, then you up your ventilation game. You can open one or more of the windows to let in more fresh air and to remove hot cooking air and smells.

This is also a secure solution. If you leave wall windows or patio doors open to freshen up your kitchen, someone could get into your home easily enough. An open skylight is much more secure.

3. Keep More Wall Space

Wall space is important in a kitchen. The more walls you have free, the more things you can fit into the kitchen. If you install a wall window in your extension, then it takes up space you could have used for cabinets, work areas and furniture, for example.

If you use roof skylights to illuminate the extension, then you keep as much wall space free as possible. This gives you more room to design the kitchen of your dreams.

4. Stay Private

If the walls of your extension are overlooked by neighbouring homes, then you may worry that your neighbours will be able to see directly into the room. While you can put curtains or blinds on windows in a wall, they can make the room darker than it needs to be.

If you install skylights, you get natural privacy. Your windows are in your roof, and they aren't overlooked.
